Arch Enemy is a thrash-influenced melodic death metal band formed in 1996. Their lyrics are themed towards rebellion against contemporary society and religion. Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (ex-Carcass, Carnage and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled from the ashes of legendary British melodic death metal/grindcore band Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott were joined by vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Armageddon, Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called "An attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality." The band's debut, entitled Black Earth, was released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single "Bury Me An Angel", as well as moderate success in Sweden.

[Lyrics: Johan Liiva]
Weak and sick I crawl
In the dust of past mistakes
Leaving for the darkness
Of tears and cold heartaches
Suffer in this grief
Of forever burning hate
The ashes of my life
By the torment you create
[Chorus:]
On my knees... remembering
The wasted years of dark insanity
The rage increases fast
As the memories eat me alive
God, I wish this to end
But I'm not prepared to die
No more a human being
Just a fool of anxiety
Unable to escape
The darkest insanity
