Arch Enemy is a thrash-influenced melodic death metal band formed in 1996. Their lyrics are themed towards rebellion against contemporary society and religion. Arch Enemy, the brainchild of Michael Amott (ex-Carcass, Carnage and Spiritual Beggars) was originally assembled from the ashes of legendary British melodic death metal/grindcore band Carcass. Guitarists Michael Amott and younger brother Christopher Amott were joined by vocalist Johan Liiva (ex-Carnage) and then-session drummer Daniel Erlandsson (Armageddon, Eucharist) in what Michael Amott called "An attempt to merge melody with aggression and technicality." The band's debut, entitled Black Earth, was released by the now defunct Wrong Again Records in 1996. It obtained a fair amount of success in Japan, achieving MTV rotation with their first single "Bury Me An Angel", as well as moderate success in Sweden.

The First Deadly Sin Lyrics

Arch Enemy

Step inside the circle of fire
Flames of desire enlighten the night
Follow your instinct
Burn and writhe in ecstasy

Love will turn to hate
Heat will turn to ice
There is nothing in between
The first deadly sin

Ancient taboo takes control
The demon eve possesses your soul
Riding high above the flames
You will step into hell

[Lead and slide solo - Christopher]

Dwell in passionate evil
Forbidden fruits of lust
Embrace and kiss the face of death
It's your first deadly sin
